Early Morning Turkey Scouting

Scotty and myself got to the farm before daylight yesterday to try and locate some big ole gobblers on the farm. The morning was cold and clear which made it hard to climb out of the nice warm truck at 6:15 am. Its amazing how the sun coming up causes the woods to come alive with sounds and movement. We weren’t there more than 5 minutes when we heard the first gobbles of the morning. For people who don’t know, Turkeys sleep or roost in trees at night which are called roost trees. When day breaks the Turkey awake and fly down onto the ground and start talking almost immediately. We could hear Hens cutting or talking and some gobblers gobbling away. They do this for quit awhile first thing in the morning making it easier  for hunters to locate them.  After day breaks and the birds are on the ground hunters can use various calls to try and locate the toms (called locator calls). We use owl, crow and goose calls as well as various others to get them into gobbling back. Its funny how a owl hooting, or a coyote howling  will make a big tom gobble. Turkeys are very active first thing in the morning especially with the breeding season fast approaching.  So get out there and experience your local group of Turkeys waking up and saying good morning to you….

We have several hunters coming into our ranch this yr too and I have been hearing the Tom’s talking and the hens paying no attention to them….. The turkeys make a terrible mess in our yard and so my border collie & red healer herd them out. They love my daffodils & my daylillies. I hope everyone who enjoys the turkey hunting, bags their’s this yr.

Turkey season on the farm has exceded my expectations with all the hunters but one getting their birds. We are still seeing alot of birds and still have hunting available. Hopefully you got your bird, if not give us a call and come out and give it a try…
