Grain Sales

I have almost finished farming for the year.  I have the combines put away and now is the time to do the office work for the year.  I am selling wheat this year for about $8.00.  This really is a great price and I remember that three years that I sold wheat for $3.50 to $4.00.  Last January the price took a big tumble one day so I sold some wheat for September delivery for $6.20.  This looks like a mistake now as wheat is now $8.00 a bushel.  This could have looked like a good move if wheat had dropped to $4.00.  One never has a crystal ball when it comes to the grain market.

The reason the price is up has more to do with the low value of the US dollar and the poor growing conditions in the rest of the world.  The drought in the Midwest really has more to do with the price of corn as this is used as a feed grain.  As corn goes up wheat is also lifted up as wheat can be feed in place of corn.

Every farmer is watching the outcome of the election.  Prices tend to drop after an election.  I really doesn’t matter who wins, it is just that prices tend to drop after presidential elections.

So the question is.  Do I market the rest of my grain before the election or do I hold off and hope the world supply gets tighter and drives up the price?
